Team South Africa was in action this afternoon against Thailand. South Africa, represented by Jason Theron and Kyle Akaloo kicked off their World Cup of Pool 2022 journey in the first match of the afternoon session. Their opponents Thailand represented by snooker stars Thepchaiya Un-Nooh and Noppon Saengkham was given a surprise opportunity to compete in the event after the Philippines had to withdraw due to travel issues.
In a race to 7 battle it looked like South Africa was off to a great start and could take the match 7 – 0. But with a few unforced errors the team from Thailand was able to secure a few frames. It was clear in the match that both Thepchaiya Un-Nooh and Noppon Saengkham struggled to adjust to the game of nineball, since they have a strong background in snooker, even seeing them opt to rather play with their snooker cues instead of their nineball cues. After making the switch they looked to be more comfortable but still made unforced errors.
After the team from Thailand looked like they were ready to stage a comeback, the South Africans were quick to shut down their attempt. Seeing the final score at 7 – 3.
South Africa will be facing the menacing task in the form of Great Britain B tomorrow during the evening session. Great Britain B represented by Imran Majid and Chris Melling made quick work of Great Britain A with a whitewash last night.
The South Africans will want their nerves to settle now that they have gone passed round 1 as they have a tough task ahead of them. We look forward to the match.
